The German biometric photo is 35 × 45 mm with a 32–36 mm face. The maker builds that geometry for visas and forms, but not for a German passport or ID card.

A selfie is fine. The photo is taken by itself only when position, shoulders, facing, expression and light are all right; size and framing are set automatically.

Add one photo of your face looking straight at the camera (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC).

How to take a photo that passes
  • Stand about 1 m in front of a plain light wall, facing a window or soft light.
  • A selfie is fine: hold the phone at arm’s length at eye level (both hands keep the shoulders level), face and shoulders square to it. A phone right in front of the face makes the nose and forehead look bigger.
  • Look straight at the camera, mouth closed, both eyes open, hair off the eyes and ears.
  • No hat, no tinted glasses; keep your shoulders in the picture.
  • Use a photo taken in the last 6 months.

Your photo stays on this device. Only the AI model files (about 41 MB, once) are downloaded from this site.

Your photo never leaves this device. Everything runs in your browser.

What it does

  • The rules for German biometric photo

For German biometric photo, ‘Show size and rules’ lists 35 × 45 mm, a head of 32–36 mm, a light grey or white background, and the rule on glasses: glasses are allowed only if the frames do not cover the eyes and the lenses do not reflect light.

  • The head measured the way this office measures it

For the German biometric photo photo the head is measured from the chin to the top of the head, hair not counted. The maker applies that measure to the German biometric photo frame, so hair does not skew the face size.

  • The file or the sheet you need

Save the German biometric photo photo as a JPG at the right pixel size, or as a print sheet with several 35 × 45 mm copies on one page.

Good to know

Since 1 May 2025 German passports and ID cards only accept digital photos from certified photo studios or the photo terminal at the office. A photo made here is therefore for visas and other uses; for a German passport, use a studio or the terminal.

The figures for German biometric photo come from the maker’s rule card, checked in October 2026 against the issuing office’s published guidance, and rules change, so read the current German biometric photo instructions before you submit.
